Fraunhofer HHI Research: Emotions to Data

Project Type: Motion Capture | Role: Motion Capture Artist / Assistant Director | Year: 2023

About

The Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut collaborated with the Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf on a research project exploring the generation and application of emotion-driven data. Researcher David Moreno from the HHI led the study, preparing the scenarios and overseeing the methodology. To achieve this, a motion capture session was conducted with actor Noah Tomiak and actress Anna Matviienko. Carefully scripted scenarios were performed to express a range of emotions, focusing particularly on body movement, which was tracked with the Vicon system. The audio was also recorded to capture the emotional expression in the voices.

My Tasks

Together with Codrin Podoleanu, we set up the motion capture system, calibrating the Vicon cameras and preparing two characters in Shogun Live to capture both actors simultaneously. My second role was to support David Moreno in directing the actors to achieve the desired emotional expressions for each scenario.
